Okra
A new smart-casual diner by Max Levy, the only non-Chinese chef at Sushi Yasuda, Okra doesn’t take reservations and has a standing-table section. But before YOU get any reservations, try the cuisine. The diverse tapas-like menu is divided into smaller A-sides and larger B-sides, and the culinary boldness of each make any waiting worthwhile.
Buenos Aires Polo Club
Walk in and you’re struck by the private-club vibe, the wall of lovingly rendered horse oil paintings and the impressive selection of steak knives - but that’s only until the food arrives. Chef Felipe Lopez is here to prove that the asado grill is alive and well in Hong Kong.
The Market
A high-ceilinged open kitchen aptly designed in the style of a Wanchai market, this bustling buffet has everything from high-quality Sichuan to Indian, Malaysian and Italian - each major worldly cuisine sumptuously spoken for, as are some lesser-known ones.
The Peninsula
The Peninsula’s place among the best hotels in the world is not at all overstated. This Twenties-era harbour monolith manages to evoke a romanticised colonialist past that’s in perfect balance with modern luxuries and conveniences, a perfect base from which to explore Hong Kong.
Tuve
Five minutes from Tin Hau subway station in a terrifically un-touristy neighbourhood populated by restaurants, cafes and shopping is Tuve, a new boutique hotel that takes pride in its stripped-back industrial elegance. Walking into the subterranean lobby feels like entering a spaceship or a futuristic installation.
Conrad Hotel
The Conrad is situated in the upper floors of a central tower so the views are, of course, marvellous. But there’s so much more to this one. In addition to the generous rooms, the soft beds and the deep-soak baths, this hotel offers four unique restaurants, two bars and a sensational rooftop pool.
Foxglove
Walk through the umbrella shop, touch a specific umbrella at the back, and head through the newly revealed secret door without blinking an eye. On the other side you’ll see an expanse of Kubrickian whiskey bar that looks equal part Jag interior, first class fantasy liner and cinematic invention.
Lan Kwai Fong
LKF for short, this surprisingly small precinct is one of the nightlife capitals of Hong Kong. Packed into a small square of streets are over a hundred bars, restaurants and clubs: it’s Hong Kong’s answer to Tokyo’s Golden Gai.
